Full Match Report

David Willey claimed five wickets as Northamptonshire completed an emphatic innings victory inside three days of their LV= County Championship Division Two match against Essex at Wantage Road.

The visitors collapsed in chilly conditions and were bowled out for 207 with only Rob Quiney and England's Ravi Bopara providing any resistance with 56 and 41 respectively.

Willey followed up his batting heroics from the second day with superb figures of 5-67 as Northants, who have begun the season brightly, wrapped up their first win of the campaign before tea.

Essex began the day on 94 for two in the second innings, 122 runs behind their opponents, with Australia international Quiney resuming on 44 and nightwatchman Maurice Chambers yet to score.

Quiney went on to complete a watchful half-century off 101 balls with a four over square-leg off former South Africa all-rounder Andrew Hall.

But he perished soon after when edging a leg-side delivery from Willey to Northants wicketkeeper David Murphy, and the wickets then fell at regular intervals .

Chambers spent 75 minutes at the crease, although he only made three off 65 balls before his off stump uprooted by Steven Crook.

Essex were then plunged further into trouble as David Sales took a brilliant one-handed catch to his right that dismissed Mark Pettini off Hall.

They limped along to 154 for five at lunch, still 62 runs behind, but then lost captain James Foster for 11 in the fourth over of the afternoon when he edged Willey to Hall at first slip.

The visitors were pushed even closer to the abyss as Greg Smith was caught and bowled by Willey, who showed great reflexes to pick up his fourth wicket.

The 23-year-old seamer then completed his fourth five-wicket haul in first-class cricket when Bopara edged a terrific delivery and was taken by Murphy.

That came after Willey had equalled his career-best total of 76 yesterday as part of a remarkable effort by Northants' tailenders that set up their victory.

Any chance of making the hosts bat again disappeared when Graham Napier launched Hall to Crook, who took an easy catch at extra cover.

Crook then finished off proceedings by sending Tymal Mills’ middle stump tumbling, meaning Northants came away from a one-sided encounter with 23 points and Essex just three.
