The son and nephew of former New Zealand internationals – Brendon and John respectively – Doug’s cricketing pedigree is beyond question, but he has very much made his own name in the game in recent years. A fast-bowling all-rounder, his Test debut came against Zimbabwe in 2011 and a nine-wicket haul in only his third match helped the Black Caps beat Australia in a close finish at Hobart. NCCC coach David Ripley was attracted by this “highly-skilled and vastly experienced” cricketer, who to date can boast 27 Tests, 16 ODIs and 17 T20 internationals in his country’s colours. Back in March he tasted success with bat and ball for a New Zealand XI in their tour match against Joe Root’s England side.
Tim Ambrose made his 17th first-class century to give Warwickshire a chance to press for victory over Northamptonshire at Wantage Road with two days remaining.
